Holistic Skincare Philosophy

Honestly, I'm the last person on earth I thought would end up in the health and beauty industry. For starters, I actually have oily and acne prone skin, in addition to eczema. Further, my skin was never at the top of my priority—even with my skin conditions. Embarrassed to admit...but I didn't even start a skincare routine until the middle of my graduate program. And quite frankly, I love hearty southern food (being born and raised in New Orleans, LA), chocolate, cheese and wine far too much to even think about how that would have an impact on my skin.
It wasn't until I became a mom to both kids with eczema and realizing how harmful consumer products could actually be (through working on food and health research for a decade) that inspired the founding of Nature's Trusts. It was purely out of anger and frustration of not being able to find truly safe, all natural and organic solutions for my family's skin conditions that I decided to create an all-natural and organic skincare line to help educate folks about all natural health, wellness and beauty—along with providing my family with skincare products that is safely made out of my own kitchen and some grown in my own backyard!
One of the key reasons as to why people (myself included) are suckered into the conventional beauty concept of quick fixes is that we have been socialized into a world where the idea of beauty is easily attainable through "miracle creams", Botox, and plastic surgery rather than realizing that the essence of beauty actually lies within the mind, body and spirit.
As I see it, feeling beautiful is in fact one's true beauty secret. It is about being at home with yourself and being comfortable in your own skin, a truly organic beauty. I have to say that this self-actualization is realized at different points in time for everyone. For me personally, I did not realize my own natural beauty until after I had two babies! Believe it or not. Having them allowed me to appreciate the true capabilities of my (female) body; and hence lies within...my own natural beauty.
Through the years, my skincare philosophy has evolved into one that is about promoting your own skin's health through a more holistic approach to living. This holistic skincare philosophy assumes that your skin's health have multiple facets that should be considered: what you slather on your skin, what you eat, the amount of physical activity you engage in each day, and how you are doing mentally/spiritually.

With a more holistic approach in mind, I believe skincare should include:
1. All Natural & Organic Ingredients: Mother nature designed everything in our environment, even our bodies, to heal. Using all natural and organic ingredients provided by nature to promote healing is essential to promoting natural skin health and beauty.
2. Simplicity: A skincare routine requiring minimal product and taking the least amount of time to apply are the ones I believe fits with our modern, time-deprived lifestyles that is actually sustainable—or at least in my case. This is where I firmly believe less is more!
3. Personality: Skin is very personal. Determining and treating the causes of skin conditions are pivotal to identifying appropriate lifestyle adaptations and skincare regimens. There is no "one-size fits all" product or regimen that will work for all skin types. Instead, the best skincare regimen is that one that works best for you.
The skin is the largest organ on the body and requires the consideration of what is actually going on with your body. Besides what type of skincare products you're using, this means you should also consider what is feeding your body, mind and spirit. Not only does a holistic health approach improve your skin, but also it rewards you with your best body. How can you go wrong with that, right? So, while I am a far cry from someone with perfect skin, I do believe that we can all choose to have our best skin... And, it all starts with a holistic skincare philosophy.
